Unescorted Visitors
A badge gets someone in. A host keeps them accounted for.
What Is Unescorted Visitors?
A visitor badge records that someone was signed in at a front desk. The escort is what keeps track of where they go next, and it is the half that quietly goes missing. You watch a lone guest get pointed toward the printer and leave with a confidential printout, then meet the same situation yourself: read the badge, ask the question that settles it, walk her back, and report the handover that failed.
What You'll Learn in Unescorted Visitors
- Recognize that a visitor badge marked Escort required describes an agreement at the desk, not the visitor's current situation
- Identify the moment a guest has come loose from their host, even when their badge, story and reason for visiting all hold up
- Verify a visitor's purpose by asking who they are here to see rather than what they are looking for
- Escort an unaccompanied visitor back to reception instead of directing them onward through the building
- Report an escort failure so the handover at the front desk gets corrected for every visitor who follows
Unescorted Visitors — Training Steps
-
Two Weeks Ago
Two weeks ago, on the third floor of Kestrel & Vane Publishing. Alice is marking up proofs with a mug of tea going cold beside the keyboard. An email from the front desk lands, the kind that goes round whenever outsiders are in the building.
-
A Visitor, Alone
At twenty past ten a woman steps onto the third floor. Visitor badge on her chest, clipboard under one arm, and nobody walking with her. She stops in the middle of the floor and looks over at Alice.
-
She Asks
She waits until Alice looks up, then asks the only thing she has come to ask.
-
What Alice Said
Two weeks ago Alice answered the question she was asked, and went back to her proofs.
-
At The Printer
She crosses to the shared printer by the wall. Nobody walks over with her. The tray under it still holds this morning's unclaimed job: the partner pay review, sent down at 09:41 and never collected.
-
The Tray
She prints nothing. She reads the top sheet in the tray, turns it over, and it goes under her arm with the clipboard.
-
Gone
She thanks nobody in particular and leaves by the stairs, at the same unhurried pace she came in at.
-
A Week Later
A week goes by. Then HR send a note to the whole of the third floor.
-
Auditors In Today
Brightwater are back to finish the review, and the same notice goes round from the front desk, word for word. Alice is marking up proofs with a mug of tea going cold beside the keyboard.
-
Someone On The Floor
At twenty past ten a woman steps onto the third floor. Visitor badge on her chest, clipboard under one arm, and nobody walking with her. She stops in the middle of the floor. The third floor is not on the schedule Ivy sent round. The committee reprinted the pay review this morning, and it is sitting in the tray by the wall.
